Mr Reiling, has anyone driven the new Audi e-tron GT more often than you?
I can't say, but in my role as technical project manager, I drive the vehicles quite a lot – even in the very early stages and with different software versions. I was on the road with all three models and, together with my colleagues, I also carried out the final properties acceptance test.
Technically, this is the most important change: the series now comprises three models.
Indeed, including the S, the RS and the RS performance, we now have three variants instead of two, as was previously the case. And they differ in terms of design and performance data. All three bring significant new developments when it comes to performance, suitability for everyday use and comfort. We have revised many things down to the last detail. They may not always be visible, but you can feel them when driving.
This level of detail is rather unusual for a product upgrade.
When it comes to emphasis and consistency, such as in the new Audi e-tron GT, it is indeed rather unusual, to say the least. Normally, the chassis and drive system will not change much, and the design plays a much bigger role. But the all-electric drive technology of the Audi e-tron GT has given us opportunities to take more comprehensive measures. A lot has changed compared to the predecessor model in terms of the drive, driving characteristics and the high-voltage system
As part of a three-person project management team, Dr Jaan Mattes Reiling was responsible for the chassis, drive and high-voltage system, including battery and charging technology, of the new Audi e-tron GT generation.
“We achieve unrivalled acceleration in the Audi RS e-tron GT performance*.

The Audi S e-tron GT* is the entry-level model in the range. It also impresses with increased performance values.

What was particularly important?
It was important to us to increase the performance data, among other things. This applies to all model variants. For instance, we revised the motors, the aerodynamics, the chassis and the brakes. Many parts of the drive on the rear axle are new, and we also modernised the power electronics on the front axle. Let me give you an example to show you the depth of detail: Even the gap between the brake pad and brake disc was adjusted to achieve less residual braking torque, which in turn benefits efficiency.
Is there anything that surprised you during the development process?
The car is actually lighter than its predecessor, yet it is more performant when it comes to the relevant parameters. In the high-voltage system, we optimised the cell chemistry of the battery and thus significantly increased the capacity without having to increase the size of the battery. New, specially developed tyres with optimised rolling resistance also contribute to a range gain in the WLTP cycle
In addition to the carbon roof, a new, technically sophisticated panoramic glass roof is available as an option, which can be individually controlled like a digital curtain via the MMI display.
At the rear of the Audi RS e-tron GT*, the diffuser bridges and the vertical reflector between them have a signalling effect and aerodynamic function.

When it comes to the range, the charging speed plays an important role. What progress has been made in this area?
Charging speed is a decisive factor, especially when you want to drive your car every day. In the new Audi e-tron GT, the maximum charging performance* has been increased by 50 kW to 320 kW, which in itself is a remarkable value. No less important for me, however, is the further improved charging curve. This means that the vehicle can now maintain high charging power over an even longer period of time.

The model series benefits from the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE). The Audi RS e-tron GT performance* has a maximum power output of 680 kW on launch control mode.

What are your personal highlights?
It’s not that easy to say. We can achieve unrivalled acceleration in the Audi RS e-tron GT performance*. With the hydraulic suspension with active damper control, we now offer an optional technology that, in my opinion, is unmatched. What makes me particularly happy: We incorporated specific feedback from our customers, be it about recuperation or the graphic display of charging power in the MMI. I have accompanied the development of many Audi models in my time, and I am genuinely impressed by the fact that we were able to add so many innovations to a vehicle like the Audi e-tron GT, which was actually pretty perfect before!
Jaan Mattes Reiling extensively tested all model variants as part of the development work on the new generation of the Audi e-tron GT. The technological leap in development and the design improvements that were possible in a short space of time made a lasting impression on him.
